We are pleased to see that, with few exceptions, international reporting about the unofficial referendums on independence held last weekend in several Catalan towns has been informative and fair. This admittedly symbolic consultation was launched and run by private organizations mobilizing some 15,000 volunteers, with little or no financial support, and in the face of the initial scepticism of so-called nationalist political parties, the frank opposition of the ruling socialists and a prejudiced silence on the part of the major Catalan papers and the public radio and television stations. Spanish media, for their part, have all shown their discomfort by taking attitudes that range from righteous indignation to patronizing scorn. The Spanish government’s official position has been simply to dismiss the whole exercise as legally void – something that everyone knew in the first place – or as a mere diversion. No one doubts, however, that there will be some serious stocktaking both in Madrid and within all political parties in Catalonia after nearly 200,000 people, who were all well aware that their vote would have no immediate effects, turned up to have their say anyway, and when the idea of people asking other people about their common future seems to be catching on.

Il faut se féliciter de ce que les informations parues dans la presse française et internationale à propos des référendums sur l´indépendance qu´ont eu lieu ce weekend en Catalogne ont été, avec quelques exceptions, bien fondées et objectives. Il s´agissait d´une initiative strictement populaire, financée avec des contributions de particuliers et menée à terme avec une organisation enviable par des centaines de volontaires. Il faut souligner qu´au début elle n´avait même pas l’appui des partis soi-disant nationalistes, alors que le parti socialiste, la radio et la télévision publiques et les principaux journaux de Barcelone ont fait de leur mieux pour la passer sous silence. Amener dans ces conditions là 200.000 personnes aux urnes pour une consultation purement symbolique n´aurait pas de précédent en Europe, et devrait être considéré une victoire éclatante, dont le gouvernement espagnol et les forces politiques catalanes auront sûrement pris bonne note, même quand ils veulent faire semblant de l´ignorer.

Bisogna congratularsi che le informazioni pubbliccate nella stampa internazionale ed italiana riguardo i referendum sull’independenza che si sono svolti questo scorso weekend in Catalogna siano stati, con qualche eccezione, ben trovate ed obiettive. Si è trattato di una iniziativa prettamente popolare, a finanzamento dai contributi di particolari e portata avanti con un’organizzazione compresa da non meno di 15 milla volontari civili ed independente dai partiti politici presenti sia nel Parlamento catalano e nemmeno in quello spagnolo.
Inoltre, ci vuole mettere in evidenza che sin dall’inizio di questa iniziativa, i partiti cosiddetti independentisti o autonimisti catalani e ancor meno quello socialista -attualmente al Governo tripartito autonomo catalano- ed anche le emittenti -radio e televisione pubblica ed i principali quotidiani di Barcellona- hanno fatto sì degli sforzi per silenziare i referendum senza, però, riuscirne e non potendo evitare che il discorso sull’independenza sia a tutt’oggi nel centro dell’agenda politica catalana. Siamo consapevoli che un’inziativa del genere,con una partecipazione intorno al 30% delle 700.000 persone chiamate alle urne, cioè circa 200.000 votanti, per una consulta simbolica non ha precedente in Europa e, per ciò, dovrebbe per se stessa essere considerata già una vittoria degli independentisti catalani in confronto al governo spagnolo ed una chiamata alle forze politiche catalane che sembrano ignorare, anche quelle cosiddette independentiste, , un movimento che soltanto risponde ad un sentimento ogni volta più steso nella società sulla possibilità chella Catalogna possa esercitare il proprio diritto all’autodeterminazione
