Your report of October 16, 2009 about bullfights in Barcelona (“Spain’s Catalonia Moves to Ban Bullfighting”) contrasts favorably with some stories on the subject that have appeared in the Spanish press and at least in one international publication (see article in The New York Times and Col·lectiu Emma’s reply). Those stories tend to give credence to the views of Spanish nationalists seeking to portray the anti-bullfighting initiative as a politically-motivated and almost seditious act. Conversely, in your correspondent’s even-handed treatment divergent opinions are allowed to be heard and the widespread public opposition to bullfights in Catalonia is put into its right perspective.
