Only a few weeks ago Col·lectiu Emma alerted about the episodes of hate speech against Catalans that are on the rise in social networks and in some established media in Spain (see “The world should be paying attention to hate speech in Spain (Notes on the recent death threats against a Catalan Olympian)“). Last week this situation took an uglier turn when a Lieutenant Colonel in the Spanish army publicly warned that any move towards the independence of Catalonia would prompt a reaction from the military (see here). So far there has been no official response from the civilian authorities in Spain. The threat of military action in a European country should be taken very seriously by other EU member states. MEP Ramon Tremosa has announced that he intends to address a question to the European Parliament on this incident. The issue will also be mentioned by Catalan parlamentarian Antoni Strubell in a speech to the Scottish Parliament later this month. A letter denouncing these facts which Mr. Strubell sent to the editor of The Guardian has been posted on his Facebook account (see here). We are concerned by the lack of international attention to this disturbing trend, and we would like to recommend one of the few articles where it is mentioned (“Spanish Colonel Threats Military Intervention Against Catalan Independence“).
